The solar eclipse of Wednesday, July 22, 2009 will be the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting at most 6 minutes, 39 seconds.

Safe Viewing Methods
There are only three safe viewing methods:

1. Viewing through a special aluminized Mylar film designed specifically for eclipse viewing. (The Mylar may be made into very inexpensive paper-framed viewers or glasses and sold cheaply, or distributed free.)

2. Viewing through very dark welder’s glass

3. Viewing by projection: you use a card with a small hole in it to project an image of the eclipse on a screen, and you watch the screen, not the sun. You can use a piece of paper, or even a straw hat with a little hole in it. Just put something with a little hole in it over a flat surface and you’ll see the sun’s movement.

Unsafe Viewing Methods
These viewing methods, some hallowed by folk tradition or flawed logic, are unsafe, and you will damage your eyes by using them:

Sunglasses, single or multiple layers
Smoked glass
All color film, black-and-white film that contains no silver, photographic negatives with images on them (x-rays and snapshots)
Polarizing filters
Photographic neutral density filters
Mylar film not of optical grade (such as product packaging)

Kam Pu-daeng and Nungning have a very close relationship but Nungning’s best friend at Maetaman has got to be the eight-year-old Boombim. The two elephants will play endlessly together in the river during bath time. The only thing that Nungning seems to not like are dogs and chickens. She will get agitated when one or the other is near. Otherwise, she is generally cheerful and good spirited even though she can still be a bit mischievious at times.

The meteorological office here Wednesday issued a cyclone warning in Orissa putting the state’s four ports on high alert.

"A deep depression formed over the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has moved in the northwesterly direction and intensified into a cyclonic storm," S K Dastidar of the Bhubaneswar met office told IANS.

In the evening, it was laying centered at about 500 km south-south-east of Orissa’s Gopalpur town, Dastidar said describing the storm as Bijli.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly direction for some time, he said.

Rain or thundershowers were likely to occur at many places over coastal Orissa and a few places over interior Orissa in the next 48 hours, he said.

Heavy rains are also likely at isolated places in coastal districts.

Local Cautionary Signal Number-three (LC-III) has been hoisted at the Gopalpur, Puri, Paradeep and Chandbali ports, he said.

Strong winds with a speed of around 70 km per hour are likely to prevail along and off the Orissa coast Thursday morning. Sea condition will be rough to very rough and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Undersea Tonga Volcanic Eruption Sends Ash Exploding From Sea

An undersea volcano is erupting in the Tonga islands, shooting clouds of volcanic smoke, steam, and ash thousands of feet into the sky above the South Pacific ocean.There have been no reports of fish or other animals being affected.

Out of the sea about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu—an area where up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered.Large amounts of pumice thrown up by the volcanic eruption would likely clog beaches on the southern coast of the nearby Fiji Islands within a short time, Mafi said.

Tonga, a 170-island archipelago about halfway between Australia and Tahiti.

Tokyo’s Volcano erupts raining ash

Smoke and gases billow from Japan’s snowcapped Mount Asama volcano early today. Powdery volcanic ash from the eruption rained down on parts of Tokyo, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) from the volcano. So far no resulting damage or injuries have been reported.

Beginning at 1:51 a.m. local time, the volcano belched out a mile-high (1.6-kilometer-high) plume and continued smoking all day. Chunks of rock from the eruption were found about 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) from the volcano.

"We don’t think there will be any stronger eruptions, but we don’t see the activity stopping anytime soon, either," Kazuya Kokubo, an official with Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.

The eruption was not big enough to disrupt daily life near the volcano, though many people awoke to find their cars covered in a fine layer of powder. National broadcaster NHK showed people in Tokyo lining up for carwashes.

Mount Asama has been active for at least hundreds of years.

Its last major eruption took place in September 2004, spewing enough ash to damage local crops. It frequently spews smaller amounts of ash from its crater.

With 108 active volcanoes, Japan is among the most seismically busy countries in the world. The country lies in the Ring of Fire—a series of volcanoes and fault lines that roughly encircle the Pacific Ocean.

8. Black Hole Seen in Closest Look Ever
Ground-based radio telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona, and California combined forces to examine the super massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.Although by definition we can’t see a black hole directly, we can see the bright region of radio emissions known as Sagittarius A* that’s thought to be either a disk of matter swirling toward the black hole, or a high-speed jet of matter being ejected from it.Astronomers who released the image in September noted that further study of Sagittarius A* should help us understand "what happens as matter is drawn near to the black hole and disappears forever."

9. First Picture of Alien Planet Orbiting Sunlike Star?
A faint dot above a blazing inferno is possibly the first direct view of a planet outside our solar system orbiting a sunlike star.The infrared image, taken by the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii, was released in September.
