What is Swine Flu?

Is the current swine flu virus contagious?

•Various international agencies (US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, World Health Organization) have determined that this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human.

•WHO has escalated the world Pandemic Phase from Phase 3 to Phase 4 (in a 6-scale Phase), indicating that a worldwide pandemic due to swine flu H1N1 is possible.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?

•The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

•Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people.

•Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How does swine flu spread?

•Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads.

•Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza.

•Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with live flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How are human infections with swine influenza diagnosed?

•To diagnose swine influenza A infection, a respiratory specimen would generally need to be collected within the first 4 to 5 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be shedding virus).

•However, some persons, especially children, may shed virus for 10 days or longer.

•Identification as a swine flu influenza A virus requires sending the specimen to a hospital laboratory for testing.

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?

•Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick.

•That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?

•People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset.

•Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

Is there a vaccine for Pandemic Flu?

•Because the virus is new, there will be no vaccine ready to protect against pandemic flu.

•The virus can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with the virus and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

•Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. The virus can then be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk, doorknob, child’s toy or phone handset and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

How long can viruses live outside the body?

•We know that some viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks.

•Frequent hand washing will help you reduce the chance of getting contamination from these common surfaces.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

•Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

•Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. The virus can spread this way.

•Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

•If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

What is the best way to keep from spreading the virus through coughing or sneezing?

•If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible. Do not go to work or school if ill.

•Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Put your used tissue in the waste basket.

•Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

What is the best technique for washing my hands to avoid getting the flu?

•Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner.

•When you wash your hands — with soap and warm water — that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores.

•If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn’t need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

What should I do if I get sick?

•If you live in areas where swine influenza cases have been identified and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, you may want to contact their health care provider, particularly if you are worried about your symptoms. Your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed.

•If you are sick, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.

•If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs (next 2 slides), seek emergency medical care.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

•Fast breathing or trouble breathing

•Bluish skin color

•Not drinking enough fluids

•Not waking up or not interacting

•Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held

•Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

•Fever with a rash

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

•Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

•Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

•Sudden dizziness

•Confusion

•Severe or persistent vomiting

Household Cleaning, Laundry, and Waste Disposal

•Throw away tissues and other disposable items used by the sick person in the trash. Wash your hands after touching used tissues and similar waste.

•Keep surfaces (esp bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, children’s toys, phone handles, doorknobs) clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.

•Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are sick do not need to be cleaned separately, but importantly these items should not be shared without washing thoroughly first.

•Wash linens (such as bed sheets and towels) by using household laundry soap and tumble dry on a hot setting. Avoid “hugging” laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating yourself. Clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub right after handling dirty laundry.

•Eating utensils should be washed either in a dishwasher or by hand with water and soap.

What is chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a very contagious disease caused by the varicella virus. Chickenpox is also called varicella.

How does it occur?

The chickenpox virus is spread through the air by infected people when they sneeze or cough. The disease also spreads from touching the chickenpox blisters without careful hand washing afterwards.

If you have already had chickenpox, you are probably immune. Being immune means that if you are exposed to chickenpox again, your body can fight off the infection and you will not get sick. If you had a very mild case of chickenpox with just a few blisters, it is possible to have chickenpox again, but this is rare.

After infection, the virus stays in your body for life. The virus can later cause shingles, which causes a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body. Someone who has not had chickenpox or the chickenpox shot could get chickenpox from close contact with someone who has shingles.

Less than 5% of adults are at risk of having chickenpox. Most are immune because they have had chickenpox or the shot. However, when an adult has chickenpox, the infection can be more serious than it is in children.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms usually appear 10 to 21 days after exposure to the virus. The symptoms include:

a red, itchy, rash of blisters that usually first appears on the face, scalp, or trunk and can spread to the rest of the body
and begin to itch
tiredness
fever
aches and pains
mild headache
feeling irritable.

How is it diagnosed?

Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and examine you. If you are pregnant and think you have been recently exposed to chickenpox, you may have a blood test to see if you are immune. Chickenpox during pregnancy can cause birth defects or even cause the baby to be stillborn. If a mother has the infection at the time of delivery, it can spread to the baby during birth.

How is it treated?

Your healthcare provider may prescribe an antiviral medicine, such as acyclovir. The medicine helps only if you start taking it within 24 hours after the first sores appear. According to recent research, antiviral medicine has mild benefits: it reduces the number of sores and lessens the time you are sick. It does not prevent other problems caused by chickenpox.

Pregnant women who have recently been in close contact with someone who has chickenpox and are not immune may be given a shot of Varicella-zoster immune globulin (VZIG). When given within 72 hours after exposure, VZIG helps prevent chickenpox or lessens its severity. The shot is safe for mother and baby.

For treatment of your symptoms, follow the guidelines provided below under the heading "How can I take care of myself?"

How long do the effects last?

Chickenpox is contagious 1 to 2 days before the rash appears. It continues to be contagious until all of the blisters have crusted over, which usually takes 4 to 7 days.

If there are no complications, adults have the chickenpox infection for 3 to 7 days.

Adolescents or adults are more likely to have complications from chickenpox than children. People who have trouble fighting infections are especially at risk for problems. This includes people being treated for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation, people who use steroids for other medical conditions, and people who have HIV infection. Possible complications are pneumonia or problems with the kidneys, heart, or joints. The nervous system may be affected, which may cause irritation and swelling in the brain (meningitis or encephalitis) or other types of nervous system problems. Sometimes an infection of the skin develops because bacteria get into sores when they are scratched.

How can I take care of myself?

Take a lukewarm bath every 3 to 4 hours for the first few days. Add 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) of baking soda, cornstarch, or oatmeal (dry, uncooked oats) per tub of water. Use soap in one of the baths each day to clean as much bacteria off the skin as possible. Pat your skin dry. Do not rub it when drying.
You can try using calamine lotion on the chickenpox sores to help relieve itching, but do not put it on your face.
Put a towel-covered ice pack or cool moist washcloth on itchy areas for 20 to 30 minutes. (Do not share the towel or washcloth with anyone else.)
If the itching is severe or making it hard to sleep, take a nonprescription antihistamine, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) capsules.
Trim your fingernails and wash your hands often with soap and warm water to help keep the rash from becoming infected if you scratch it.
If you have blisters in your mouth, eat foods that are cool, soft, and bland. Avoid any foods that are acidic or salty.
Take a nonprescription pain reliever such as acetaminophen for headache, fever, or general aches and pains.
Call 911 for emergency care if:
- You become confused, disoriented, or extremely sleepy or have trouble waking up.
- You have a severe headache or a stiff neck.
- You have trouble standing up or walking.
- You have a rash involving 1 or both eyes or you are very sensitive to bright light.
Call your healthcare provider right away if:
- You have trouble breathing or a severe cough.
- You are an adult and have a fever higher than 101.5° F (38.6 C).
- The blisters appear infected :
  - Area around blister is red.
  - A red streak is leading from the blister toward the heart.
  - Pus (usually yellow) starts leaking from the blisters.

What can be done to prevent chickenpox?

A vaccine is available to protect against chickenpox. Two shots are recommended for people 13 years or older who have not had chickenpox and who have not been previously vaccinated. The chickenpox vaccine is about 70 to 85% effective in preventing a mild infection and 95% effective in preventing moderate to severe infection.

If you have not had chickenpox or the chickenpox shot and you are exposed to chickenpox, your healthcare provider may give you a shot of Varicella-zoster immune globulin (VZIG) to help prevent the infection. You may also be given this shot if you have trouble fighting infections; for example, if you have cancer, HIV, or AIDS, or if you are receiving medicines that weaken the immune system.

Note: It is advised to get medical attention from your healthcare provider at the first sign of having chickenpox.

Diabetes is the number 3 killer of people in the world today, it causes blindness of all kinds, kidney failure, kidney transplant, cardiovascular disease, amputation of toe, feet and legs. A survey reported there are 16 million people in America with Adult Onset Type 2 Diabetes. The fastest growing age group with adult onset type 2 diabetes are kids under the age of 12. It used to be only found in people 45 to50 years of age and above. You could almost diagnose it by the age of onset. You can’t do that any more, because more and more kids under the age of 12 are developing adult onset type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or use insulin properly. When this occurs, glucose remains in the bloodstream rather than being absorbed by cells and used for energy. Glucose levels in the blood can then rise dangerously high (hyperglycemia) and, over time, cause damage to major organs and systems in the body such as the kidneys and eyes, and nerves and blood vessels.

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is referred to as an immune mediated or auto (self) immune disease. It is also called juvenile diabetes because it affects mainly children and adolescents. However, adults can also develop it. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes must take injections of insulin every day to stay alive.Type 1 diabetes occurs when the islet cells in the pancreas are damaged and no longer produce insulin. This happens when the immune system in the body, for reasons that are not clearly understood, attacks its own cells. It affects approximately 5-10 percent of people with diabetes. A rare form called Idiopathic Type 1 diabetes also exists and has no known cause.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is referred to as adult onset diabetes. It occurs when the production of insulin is not sufficient to overcome a difficulty the body has in properly using insulin. This difficulty is called insulin resistance. It is a hereditary disorder.Type 2 diabetes is treated with diet, exercise and, if necessary, medications. It accounts for 90-95 percent of all cases of diabetes and the incidence is rising rapidly, even in children.

Other Causes of Diabetes

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs in about 2-5 percent of women during pregnancy or about 135,000 women annually after the 20th week. The condition is caused from pregnancy hormones that lead to insulin resistance. In some women, whose insulin production is not sufficient to overcome the resistance, glucose levels rise.The condition poses risks to the developing fetus as the mother’s blood, with its high levels of glucose and insulin, circulates throughout its system.

Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes can be overweight over nine pounds because the mother’s high blood glucose and insulin levels causes them to gain weight. The extra weight can put the baby at risk for obesity and for developing diabetes later in life. In addition, because the baby’s body has become accustomed to extra blood glucose and insulin, its blood sugar can drop too low after birth.

In the majority of cases, gestational diabetes disappears when the woman’s pregnancy ends. But as many as 40 percent of these women will eventually develop Type 2 diabetes. In some cases, the pregnancy unveils underlying diabetes that the woman was not aware of.Diabetes caused from other factors

Diabetes may also occur from other factors such as injury to or disease of the pancreas, medications (such as steroids), surgery, infections and malnutrition. These cases account for 1-2 percent of all cases of diabetes.Signs and Symptoms:

How It Works ?

You know from the name that the test measures something called A1C. You may wonder what it has to do with your blood sugar control. Hemoglobin is found inside red blood cells. Its job is to carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body. Hemoglobin, like all proteins, links up with sugars such as glucose.

You know that when you have uncontrolled diabetes you have too much sugar in your bloodstream. This extra glucose enters your red blood cells and
links up (or glycates) with molecules of hemoglobin. The more excess glucose in your blood, the more hemoglobin gets glycated. It is possible to measure the percentage of A1C in the blood. The result is an overview of your average blood glucose control for the past few months.

An Artificial Heart @ Rs 1 lakh, Developed by IIT-Kharagpur

KOLKATA: It’ll be to coronary care what Nano is to cars, say scientists at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, who have devised an artificial heart that could save lives for just Rs 1 lakh. The research team says trials of the prototype lab—constructed heart have been successful on small animals and the gadget is being perfected on goats. The institute has applied for permission to conduct human trials.

The Total Artificial Heart (TAH) — said to be the first such in the country — has been developed by a team of scientists at IIT-Kgp’s school of medical science and technology.After four years of painstaking research, the scientists say their creation is better and far more affordable than the first artificial heart developed in the US, which showed a “high rate failure” and at Rs 30 lakh, beyond the reach of the common man.

The inventors hope to fit the heart into an ailing patient within a few months, once permissions from the Indian Council of Medical Research come through. The unique 13—chamber heart is working fine in small animals, said a member of the team. Human tests are to be conducted at Medical College and Hospital (MCH), Kolkata.

Senior cardiac surgeons — Madhusudan Pal, Bhaskar Ukil, Tarun Saha and Kalishankar Das from MCH and Rajiv Narang of AIIMS, Delhi — will conduct the human trials.

“We are also in touch with P.Venugopal, former AIIMS director and one of the leading cardiac surgeons of the country. We expect him to be part of the team as well” , said Sujoy Guha, IIT-Kgp faculty member and bio-medical engineering expert, who is leading the artificial-heart team.

“The TAH will be of great help to patients whose heart muscles have become so weak that they need immediate transplantation. Angioplasty, stents and even bypass surgery are of no use for such patients because they cannot strengthen muscles. It is difficult to find donor organs and even if transplantation is done, the body develops auto rejection and severe medication is required to suppress immune reactions," said Guha.

“This will be a life-saver, for the price of a Tata Nano” said one of the scientists. Bengal may have lost the Nano, but the world cannot miss this Rs 1-lakh invention.
